"Love conquers all things; let us too surrender to love"
- Virgil
What is Love?
For this generation, it might seem repetitive to ask this question. Multiple definitions have been crafted through time. Cynics will tell us it does not exist, or it is merely a product of capitalism. Plenty of artists describes it as a thing we need to be happy, if not all you need. Politicians use it to justify their ideology. Church pleads on the word to justify their devotion. Neurology argues that is a reaction in our brain and body. Merely a reaction.
What is NOT a reaction? Well, we could argue it means: “Anything that was not affected by an action.”
I dare to disagree. Let me explain why:
I will use help from science. Physics.
Physics is the natural science that studies matter, its fundamental constituents, its motion, and behavior through space and time.
A bit more than 100 years ago, life gave us an outstanding mind who came in and revolutionized our perception of the universe. Astonishing the world with his abstract thinking, Albert Einstein realized one of the most important breakthroughs in Physics, The Theory of General Relativity.
Einstein says that we cannot base the laws of physics on the velocity of an object, but its velocity in relation to another. Essentially, time and space are relative. They form a continuous structure called space-time affected by mass making it curve.
Example:
A ball the size of an apple goes up and down infinitely but consistently. It moves the same distance up and down and it takes the same time also.
We send this ball on a rocket to outer space. The ball keeps bouncing the same distance and taking the same time to reach the top and bottom.
Finally, we have a telescope on earth. We can see the ball bounce in the rocket as it travels through space with no gravity. For people in the ship, the ball's movement would have no difference as they are advancing in relation to the rocket. But we are not. We are on earth affected by its perfect life-giving gravity and rotation.
We can observe that the ball is moving more distance in relation to us on earth. The pattern of the ball will no longer be up and down. It will create an imaginative pattern of "zig-zag". [/\/\/\]
Before it gets complicated, if we did the mathematics, we would resolve the ball is indeed moving more distance in space than it was on earth. By understanding this principle, we conclude mass and velocity defy space-time relation due to gravity. Space-time is no longer a line. It can also curve.
We might not discern it from our point of view, but once we calculate the equation, it clicks. Perception blinds us to reality.
You might wonder: “What does all this have to do with Love?”
Love is not affected by gravity; nevertheless, it is affected by perception. Exactly as gravity affects our perception of the movement of the ball. This is the principle of the theory of Relativity. To explain Love, we must understand it from a different perspective than ours.
The ability for romantic Love is entwined as closely as time is interlocked into space. As long as we exist, we will Love.
What is gravity then?
Enough... Enough with the nerd shit. A force of attraction. Simple as that.
I was attracted by her. Or pushed onto her by a force so we would perform a reaction.
We did.
My soul was absorbed by hers; attracted and repelled by its magnetic field leading to a distorted version of my perspective. I was going faster. I could not seem to dissuade how everything felt so majestic, flawless, inspiring, tormenting, rare, divine, motivating, illuminating deteriorating, so alive.
The longer I analyze this feeling, the more I believe existence is a meticulous orchestra composed with small and synergetic particles explaining the beautifulness of an entire masterpiece made by a creator. From a scale take a note. Add another to build a chord; more of those and you get a song, just to end everything in Love. Our existence is an extremely complex system sustained by quantum fluctuating events that shape this universe and its colorful uniqueness.
I know everything between us happened too quickly. Our interaction resembled a big blue giant star radiating intensively 20 thousand times brighter and warmer than our daily sun. Despite all that, if we recall chemistry, we could determine that it was destined to die sooner as well. The greater it is, the more intense it burns, the more hydrogen it consumes, the faster it dies. The basic principle of combustion. Our hydrogen was communication.
It became unstable.
Stars that big simply do not disappear. They explode to become nebulas releasing their unstable energy to propagate their remains starting another system that can feed other stars, form planets, ensemble solar systems, galaxies, and in some truly odd cases, humans.
We are educated to believe that life is more than not being dead. That our presence in this world leads to a better tomorrow, and our experiences and memories emanate change in all we encounter.
At this moment, I feel as if I were experimenting with a sort of afterlife. It appears as my subconscious cannot find its way to rest. She has emitted such illuminance upon my humble existence that no shadow can be found to cover my conscience from it. To repose properly from the thought of her.
I see her in my daydreams. I cannot fall asleep, for I will see her in my nightmares.
Death does not provide sufficient nothingness.
Eternity seems not enough time for me to grief the loss of my Love.
I keep seeing her eyes in the mountains as the sun dawns.
I keep feeling her touch in the fresh air, caressing my wounds, reminiscing her hands.
I sense her fragrance in my future, and I can savor her lips on the bittersweetness of my memories.
With my most calm obsession and my good-natured sorrow, I can confirm there is no other space-time in the universe I would rather be in lieu.
For now, I can admire our past projected in the light from extinguished stars. Vividly, I imagine our future being simulated in the massive stretch of possibilities. At present, I possess limitless hope. I have hope because I have found you. I have hope that, eventually, I will find an answer. I will understand Love and learn to drive it along.
Love is the only force that humans cannot seem to manipulate at their will. Love might be everything. A force that regulates existence; provider of that perplexing constant randomness.
I will be thinking of her every day as I have been since day one. From another perspective, another life. From another perspective, a different reality perhaps.
I do not know how or when, or even if I am asking the right questions, but I will... I fucking will find the right ways to Love her. To create the formula that explains Love in order to calculate her location in the universe. Or to demonstrate to everyone, and especially her, that we are not “meant” to be together. We were, are, and forever will be together.
We were, relatively speaking, experimenting with Love at different velocities. We perceived our feelings in different places spiritually. We underwent a minor disturbance that our materialistic and instant-pleasure-addicted minds could not overcome. Minor compared to what we have gone through. Millions of years overcoming extinctions, adapting to climate changes and diseases. Defeating ourselves.
To collide for an instance just to absorb that we cannot control. Our Love is nothing new. It has lasted eons and we are simply part of a bigger structure. But we are its core. We are its rapidly developing conscience. The source of it all. I believe so. And you will too.
The harmony she has sprinkled over my life is not common. I cannot describe it thus far, but I will find the right ways to do so. I will find an explanation. Everything will make sense. I will understand the reason for my inexcusable, yet intelligible behavior. I will expend the last Joule of my brain to correct things as fast as my mortal body permits it.
Uncertainty consumed my rationality. I acted like a kid. I surrendered to Love without understanding what it meant. I started studying physics as it might be the path to my answers. My research has just begun. I will find the right way. Maybe this life will not be enough, but God knows how much I am praying for it to be. That we finally reached our breaking point.
This is not meant to persuade her to come back. This is merely a reaction to what Love is doing to me. This is for her to know that, even though I know I do not have the most minimal chance, I’ll be around for a while. Maybe, just maybe this crazy world decides to cheat and turns itself upside down; to quiver destiny.
Lastly, I will annex a letter attributed to Albert Einstein to his daughter. It was not written by him. Although, it is a lovely piece and evokes what I wish to believe. I beg for you to enjoy it.
Eternally Yours,
Just a Dream.
“When I proposed the theory of relativity, very few understood me, and what I will reveal now to transmit to mankind will also collide with the misunderstanding and prejudice in the world.
I ask you to guard the letters as long as necessary, years, decades, until society is advanced enough to accept what I will explain below.
There is an extremely powerful force that, so far, science has not found a formal explanation to. It is a force that includes and governs all others, and is even behind any phenomenon operating in the universe and has not yet been identified by us.
This universal force is LOVE.
When scientists looked for a unified theory of the universe, they forgot the most powerful unseen force.
Love is Light, that enlightens those who give and receive it.
Love is gravity, because it makes some people feel attracted to others.
Love is power, because it multiplies the best we have, and allows humanity not to be extinguished in their blind selfishness.
Love unfolds and reveals.
For love we live and die.
Love is God and God is Love.
This force explains everything and gives meaning to life. This is the variable that we have ignored for too long, maybe because we are afraid of love because it is the only energy in the universe that man has not learned to use at will.
To give visibility to love, I made a simple substitution in my most famous equation.
If instead of E = mc2, we accept that the energy to heal the world can be obtained through love multiplied by the speed of light squared, we arrive at the conclusion that love is the most powerful force there is, because it has no limits.
After the failure of humanity in the use and control of the other forces of the universe that have turned against us, it is urgent that we nourish ourselves with another kind of energy…
If we want our species to survive, if we are to find meaning in life, if we want to save the world and every sentient being that inhabits it, love is the one and only answer.
Perhaps we are not yet ready to make a bomb of love, a device powerful enough to entirely destroy the hate, selfishness and greed that devastate the planet.
However, each individual carries within them a small but powerful generator of love whose energy is waiting to be released.
When we learn to give and receive this universal energy, dear Lieserl, we will have affirmed that love conquers all, is able to transcend everything and anything, because love is the quintessence of life.
I deeply regret not having been able to express what is in my heart, which has quietly beaten for you all my life. Maybe it’s too late to apologize, but as time is relative, I need to tell you that I love you and thanks to you I have reached the ultimate answer!
Your father,
Albert Einstein”
